Terry Hammond was born in Brisbane and was awarded a full academic scholarship to Brisbane Boys Grammar School where he completed his secondary education. He studied medicine at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1986. His early medical career included a year as a junior surgeon in England before returning to commence his Orthopaedic career in 1991. Orthopaedic training was undertaken in Brisbane, regional Queensland and Edinburgh, Scotland. He completed his Orthopaedic Specialist training in Perth W.A. and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics) in 2003.
Dr Hammond is currently a shoulder surgeon for The Gold Coast Titans and Gold Coast Suns. He was the surgeon for the Gold Coast United soccer team and regularly sees patients from most of the sporting teams on the Gold Coast including the Burleigh Bears,Tweed Heads Seagulls, Southport Sharks, Tugun Seahawks and Gold Coast Breakers. He also regularly sees cricket players including members of the Queensland Bulls.
Following his graduation Terry pursued his interest in shoulder surgery by working in Toronto, Canada. He then completed a 6 month traveling fellowship in the United States, visiting most of the internationally recognized shoulder surgeons. He undertook a formal shoulder fellowship in the world renowned Pulvertaft unit in Derby, England and was invited to continue working in Derby as a shoulder specialist before returning to the Gold Coast in 2006.
Practice on the Gold Coast:
Terry Hammond joined the Shoulder & Sports Medicine Centre in 2006 in association with Drs Chris Vertullo and Stephen Rackemann (now retired) at the Knee & Sports Medicine Centre. He has concentrated exclusively on conditions of the adult shoulder. His private practice is now at The Shoulder Clinic at the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, 8-10 Carrara Street, Benowa opposite Pindara Hospital where he operates. Shoulder Surgery Experience:
Dr Hammond has performed well over 5,000 shoulder operations, now performing more than 450 adult shoulder operations per year. He sees approximately 2000 shoulder surgery patients per year.
Teaching and Education:
Dr Hammond maintains an active role in teaching general practitioners, physiotherapists, medical students and young surgeons in training. He regularly lectures to physiotherapists and medical students both at Griffith University and Bond University.
Family life and outside interests:
Dr Hammond is married to Sarah and has three children – Lucy, Olivia and Ella. He is a keen sportsman with particular interests in golf, tennis and surfing. He has been a keen windsurfer in the past but now is turning to kite surfing.
